Abel Santa Cruz

   
Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 1915, Abel Santa Cruz was a major Argentine screenwriter who is credited with having written more than 125 films, television series, and telenovelas over seven decades. He died in 1995 in Buenos Aires.

Abel is best known for his work on the action/crime drama “Poliladron” (also known as “Cops and Robbers”), which was produced by Pol-ka Producciones in Argentina; the telenovela “Por Siempre Mi Amor,” which was produced in Mexico; and Argentinean telenovela “María Sol.” Abel Santa Cruz first wrote the script for a film “Un Señor Mucamo” in 1940, but his career didn’t really take off for 10 years. At that time, he adapted the Oscar Wilde play, The Importance of Being Earnest, as “Al Compás de tu Mentira.” This musical about tango dancing, proved to be wildly popular.  Other popular movies written by Santa Cruz include the gangster comedy “Alias Flequillo,” as well as “Rebelde Sin Casa,” “Cleopatra era Cándida,” and  “El Profesor Hippie.”

Abel’s work continues to live on, with some 10 different tv shows based on his work being produced in the more than a decade since his death.
