Arturo Moya Grau

Arturo Moya Grau was a Chilean playwright, writer, and actor, considered by many to be the “father of the telenovela” or the “Chilean Shakespeare.”

He started his literary and dramatic career in radio theater in the 1950s on radio Nuevo Mundo, where he worked as a writer and actor. His works were said to hold the audience captive because they told stories about common feelings, in the language of the people. He later translated many of these stories to television, where he enjoyed great success with the shows Father Gallo and Maria Jose.

Moya Grau enjoyed his greatest success working on telenovelas, including La Madrastra, which was one of the first telenovelas to be entirely written, filmed, and directed in Chile. It became such a big success that both shopping and trading stopped at the time this soap opera aired. He is also well known for Colorina, which aired in Chile and went on to be remade in Argentina and multiple times in Mexico. Moya Grau also wrote for Salomé, a later adaptation of Colorina, produced by Televisa in Chile. Moya Grau went on to write many more telenovelas before his death in 1994.

Arturo Moya Grau was represented by Arcadia International in 2012.
