Alfredo Dias Gomes

Alfredo Dias Gomes was one of the fathers of Brazilian telenovelas and one of its most influential figures for three decades. He wrote his first telenovela, Ponte dos Suspiros, in 1969; this story added political themes to the usual romantic plots. In his next work, Verão Vermelho, he dealt with such controversial topics as agrarian reform, divorce, racism, and generational conflict.

Dias Gomes continued to reflect themes that captured the mood of Brazil in all his work, including El Bienamado; Saramandaia, a magical realist telenovela; Roque Santeiro, which was banned by the military; As Noivas de Copacabana; and Decadência.

In addition to his work in telenovelas, Dias Gomes also wrote novels and plays. His play, O Pagador de Promessas, was turned into a film in 1962 and won the Palme D’Or at Cannes, the only Brazilian film ever to do so. Despite facing criticism that writing telenovelas was not a serious occupation, he maintained an intellectual reputation as one of the country’s greatest dramatists.

Dias Gomes was married to fellow telenovela writer Janete Clair until her death in 1983. Dias Gomes himself died in 1999.
