José Ignacio Cabrujas

Caracas-born José Ignacio Cabrujas was a playwright, theater director, chronicler, soap opera writer, drama librettist, screenplay writer, radio moderator, humanist, and political campaign designer. He is considered one of the founders and innovators of the modern telenovela genre in Latin America, and is often called the “Maestro de las Telenovelas.” He died in 1995.

Legend has it that José decided to become a writer after reading Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables as a young man. He was moved to tears by that work, and considered its writing a miracle. He wanted to be part of that miracle.

José Ignacio Cabrujas is best known for his screenwriting work on the Venezuelan telenovelas La Señora de Cardenas; Natalia de 8 a 9, which aired in Venezuela and was remade in Mexico; La Dama de Rosa, which ran on Venezuela’s Radio Caracas Televisión and was later distributed internationally; and La Dueña, inspired by Alexandre Dumas’ novel The Count of Monte Cristo (but built around a female protagonist). That Venezuelan telenovela was remade as Dueña y Señora and aired in Puerto Rico. It was later remade as La Patrona, airing in Mexico and the U.S. on Telemundo.

José Ignacio Cabrujas has been represented by Arcadia International since 2011. Negotiations are ongoing for the acquisition of one of his screenplays, to which Arcadia International owns the rights. The company was founded by Miguel Rosenfeld in 1986. His goal was to build the company into a major distributor of telenovelas throughout Latin America. Today, Arcadia International represents the majority of Latin America’s most recognized telenovela writers. Additionally, it acquires and distributes telenovelas from around the world and brings them to Latin America.
