Sergio Vodanović

Sergio Vodanović was born in Split, Croatia, and moved to Chile as a child. He was a lawyer, journalist, dramatist, and television writer, whose works were often critical of corruption and social structures.

Sergio studied theater at Columbia and Yale Universities, and went on to become a professor at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile and the Universidad de Concepción.

His first works as a writer were light comedies acted by commercial theater companies. When he began to write for university theaters in the late 1950s, he adopted a neorealistic style, critically representing diverse aspects of the socio-political reality of his country through drama and comedy. In all, Sergio Vodanović was the author of more than a dozen plays.

Many of those same themes emerged in his work on the miniseries Una Familia Feliz, which he wrote for Canal 13 in the early 1980s. He went on to write a number of telenovelas, starting with Los Títeres. Some of Sergio’s best-known telenovelas include Secreto de Familia, La Intrusa, Villa Napoli, and Doble Juego. These television series were commercially successful, yet known for their intellectual subject matter and thinly disguised references to the Chilean socio-political climate of the 1980s. Sergio died in 2001, in Santiago, Chile
